Yazmin’s family has very basic needs – food, water and clothes. They also have an urgent need to have their electric bill paid monthly to keep her medical equipment running. Because her dad left when she became ill and her mom has to take full-time care of her, the $75 left at the end of the month has to be rotated between food, gas and electric bills.
Yazmin and her brother, Luis, are adorable 8-year-old twins. Luis is healthy. Yazmin is not. She was born with only half a heart which is malpositioned in her body, retardation, chronic pulmonary disease and a host of other debilitating conditions. She has the mental equivalency of a 2-year-old. Yet she is joyful and loves to go to Chuck E. Cheese. When Yazmin’s health conditions unfolded, her father abandoned the family leaving her mom to bear the entire burden on a monthly income of only $550. The mom and her twins are unusually close knit and take care of each other as much as possible.
After paying their rent, the family has a total of $75 to live on for the remainder of the month. Their electric bill alone runs between $100-160 per month due to the many life-saving machines Yazmin has.
